We caught up with Manuel Escamilla to learn more about being a project manager at WSP Engineering.
I have previous experience managing factories in Guatemala, including an expansion where I was involved in designing and building five new factories in Latin America.
As an operations manager, I was involved in various commercial, industrial and new product development projects at a local and international scale, which have provided me with many transferable skills and experience.
As a project manager, I am responsible for a wide range of business operations, from contractor management and health and safety to budgets and project timescales.
The ability to prioritise and organise tasks and follow up and review is a crucial part of the role. My manufacturing background allows me to place myself in the customers’ shoes and understand their challenges. A lot of time and effort goes into ensuring our projects exceed our customers’ expectations and finding solutions to minimise disruption to their operations.
Being able to build the right culture onsite that fits with WSP Engineering’s values.
Taking the time to build the right relationships with both the client and the contractors and ensuring everyone’s expectations and agendas are aligned.
WSP Engineering has very efficient processes, and there is a great synergy within the different departments and team members.
The team is very diverse, and there is a healthy culture towards this in the business. Everyone brings their own unique set of skills, experiences and areas of expertise.
Being involved in the larger projects and seeing them be completed with the vision and quality intended from the start.
Another particular highlight was being part of the team that implemented the first fully automatic robotic end-of-line packaging system for Hotel Chocolat, this has taken their operation to a new level, and it is rewarding to see them benefit from the end result.
